課程概述

This course is designed to introduce NTU students to university-level English writing. We will rehearse skills in various modes of writing including, but are not limited to, descriptive (exemplification, description, and narration), analytic (process, definition, division-classification, and comparison and contrast), argumentative (cause and effect and argument). Students will become familiar with each of these modes through four paragraph writing practices and revisions. Students will also have the chance to talk about their own writing processes as well as noting the differences between ingenious, sophisticated, quality writing and bland, hackneyed writing through one group presentation. Each writing mode will be accompanied by a set of texts which, in the instructor’s opinion, could serve as creative samples of the modes. Near the end of the course, students are expected to complete one critical essay through integrating the techniques learned in class and researching on their own selected topic.
